  • Installing solar will be an okay investment, however, it is not as beneficial as the solar and battery solution. As time goes on, and more and more solar is installed, the battery viability will overtake the solar.

The reason for this, is that on sunny days the dynamic pricing on the network will be as low as $0.06 per kwh. Early morning energy will be at $0.80 per kwh, so solar energy is an important part of the puzzle, but the battery is more important and a greater return on investment while the Council subsidies are in place.

The new energy meters our team are installing on behalf of the Council are an integral part of this as they capture pricing in thirty minute intervals.

  • There is a controller at the NIRC Powerhouse which reads the state of charge of the Tesla battery. The state of charge of the Tesla battery has some configurable parameters which determine when to turn the diesel off. When the diesel is off the tariffs drop.

When the diesel is off, and the battery is losing charge due to there not being enough solar production on the island, then pricing will be at $0.39 per kwh. This is most likely to happen in the mid to late afternoon.

The system-in-balance tariff is likely to occur mid-morning and mid-afternoon when the amount of energy being used and the solar production are equal on the network.

The battery charging tariff is likely to occur either side of midday however it is unlikely to happen in winter months until more solar installed. With good powerhouse management and cloud based control of the inverters, the solar surplus tariff should never come into play. The Besy control system will also contribute to not letting this happen with the negative price signalling slowing production on the inverters.

  • We use the Sungrow iSolarcloud monitoring system, coupled with the software and code written by Besy. It is important that we have a WiFi connection to the inverter from your property to make this cloud-based software work.

If your inverter loses communication with the cloud then it will revert back to self-consumption mode, where the solar system will still export surplus solar generation, however the battery will only cover your own night time usage and not export surplus to the network.

  • Gardel Electrical & Solar and Incite Energy have run simulations on the expected return on investment. Dynamic tariffing does complicate this, however after many calculations and simulations we have landed on the safe numbers of 3 years for early adopters, and 3.5 to 4 years for later adopters.

  • No, your panels don’t need to face north, and in many cases we are more than happy to face panels east and west. Our in-house design team and installers will assess the roof space available and we will consult with the homeowner on the best locations for the panels. Where possible, we always like to get the panels facing in two different directions to get a longer production. For example, seven panels north, with eight panels east. This will give good morning and all-round production.

  • Ideally as close to the main switchboard as possible to avoid additional charges for labor and materials. We also need the battery and inverter to be out of any direct sunlight. This doesn’t mean they need to be inside, it just needs to be in the shade.
